Cypher Sans Maître: Building a Musical Identity Through Anonymity, Technology, and Creative Freedom

I wanted to document a project that has grown far beyond what I initially imagined. Cypher Sans Maître began as a simple idea: if I couldn’t find a francophone music project dedicated to themes like digital freedom, privacy, and the open web, then I would make one myself. What followed was an unexpected evolution - an exploration of voice, identity, and creativity made possible by the tools of modern AI.

The name Cypher Sans Maître reflects the project’s core philosophy. Cypher references encryption, the protective layer shielding our data and preserving autonomy online. Sans Maître removes any notion of authority or central control. The name embodies a space free from oversight, a commitment to independence and self-direction both artistically and politically.

Musically, the project draws from influences such as Refused and Perturbator, along with the wider sphere of punk-driven energy and dark electronic atmospheres. These inspirations helped define a sound that sits at the intersection of intensity and introspection: sharp rhythms, saturated moods, and a sonic palette shaped by DIY production.

The vocal approach is equally personal. I write and perform the lyrics myself, but the final voice listeners hear is transformed through AI and post-processing. This choice is not cosmetic. It allows me to protect my anonymity while still expressing myself fully. My natural voice becomes a foundation, reshaped into a texture that belongs specifically to the project. It remains mine in intention, but mediated by technology in a way that aligns with its themes.

The production workflow is anchored in tools I’ve used for years. I compose instrumentals or build stems in Ableton, often with the help of my Launchpad MK2. Vocals begin in Audacity, where I can shape the recording before sending it into SUNO. Contrary to what some expect from AI tools, SUNO generates very little content on its own in my case because my ideas are clear when I start a song. It acts as an arranger or compiler - modifying my voice, assembling my stems, and filling in structural gaps while preserving the core of what I create. The result is a hybrid process where AI is a collaborator, not a replacement.

AI changed something fundamental for me. For a long time, I only produced instrumentals. I didn’t want to put my unmodified voice online, and that hesitation shaped the limits of what I could express. When I finally found a way to protect my identity while adding vocals, the barrier disappeared. Creativity stopped being filtered by fear or self-censorship. I could say what I wanted the way I wanted, without compromising the anonymity I value.

Anonymity itself is central to the project. Outside of this space and a few trusted contacts, no one knows who I am - not even in my real-life circles. It’s a deliberate choice, both political and practical. It preserves the boundary between online expression and everyday life, not as a means of concealment for harmful actions but as a healthy separation between identities. In the digital world, privacy is increasingly fragile; maintaining it is a form of resistance.

Cypher Sans Maître serves many purposes at once. It is personal expression, activism through art, and an ongoing artistic experiment. The project grows as I grow, shaped by new tools, new ideas, and the evolving landscape of digital culture. Listeners are always welcome to comment directly on the channel or interact with the music in any way they choose. I'll respond to everyone because the dialogue is part of the project’s fabric.

This is only the beginning, but the foundation is clear: a voice shaped by technology, a commitment to freedom, and a space where anonymity becomes a creative force rather than a limitation.
